Kemenangan partai komunis China membuat Ip Man (Donnie Yen) terpaksa harus meninggalkan keluarganya dan pindah ke Hong Kong. Master bela diri Wing Chun berhasil mendarat dengan selamat di negeri koloni Inggris ini sekitar tahun 1949. Setibanya di Hong Kong, Ip Man masih harus mencari cara untuk bisa bertahan hidup di negeri baru ini. Satu-satunya cara adalah dengan mendirikan perguruan Wing Chun. Sayangnya ini juga bukan usaha yang mudah.

Wing Chun bukanlah bela diri yang umum di Hong Kong. Meski sudah mendapat pertolongan dari seorang teman yang mengizinkan tempatnya dipakai sebagai tempat latihan namun tetap saja Ip Man tak bisa mendatangkan murid. Nasib Ip Man berubah ketika ia bertemu Wong Leung (Huang Xiaoming). Wong yang awalnya menantang Ip Man untuk adu ilmu malah akhirnya jadi murid Ip Man.
